[CAREER COACH 101] WHO: Job burnout is classified as a syndrome!

Job BurnoutThe World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified job burnout as a syndrome. It is more than just a “thing” that people feel. This classification has major health and social implications for anyone in the workforce. It also adds another level of urgency for people considering a Job Search or Career transition.

What is JOB burnout?

According to WHO, job burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. As a result, it is characterized by:

  • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
  • increased mental distance from one’s job
  • feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
  • reduced professional efficacy
Which are the WARNING signs?

Job Burnout can be caused by different reasons, but some of the common warning signs are:

  • Personal-Professional imbalance
  • Change of attitude
  • Carelessness
  • Downgraded work quality
  •  Lack of social support

Furthermore, some of the consequences of job burnout include:

  • Excessive stress
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Sadness, anger or irritability
  • Alcohol or substance misuse
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Vulnerability to illnesses
What are the implications?

Most noteworthy is that, according to Psychology Today, it is important to have a sense of purpose. Does your work have an impact on others? Does it make the world a better place? In addition, if a person doesn’t tailor responsibilities to match a true calling, or at least take a break once in a while, the person could, consequently, face a mountain of mental and physical health problems.

How can you deal with job burnout?

Most importantly learn to say “No”. Saying “no”—or “not today,” or “sorry, I can’t”—never comes easily. But when the demands others make on us become overwhelming, drawing boundaries is critical. In addition, you can evaluate other options such as:

  • Seek support
  • Try a relaxing activity
  • Get some exercise
  • Get some sleep.
  • Mindfulness

Now that job burnout has been classified as a syndrome, you should be looking for the warning signs. Are you at the point where you need to start your Job Search or Career Transition?
