The new normal in the work environment is constant change. Business organizations have to make frequent strategic and tactical changes to manage their rapidly approaching future. But changes often affect people’s careers. To manage your career within this new reality a paradigm shift may be required: the job search is a process not just an update to your resume.

How many jobs have you had?

A recently released longitudinal survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that Baby Boomers had an average of 11.9 jobs from ages 18 to 50. Due to the frequency of changes in most organizations there is no job security: you are a “disposable worker”. As a result, many professionals are forced to look elsewhere several times in their careers. How many jobs have you had in your career?

In order to maintain continued employment you should always be looking for better opportunities. It’s a continuous process! You can not control changes in the environment but you can control how you react to those changes. And to maintain a career path and continued employment you will probably need to switch between different jobs and organizations.

You should also improve critical job search skills including defining your personal brand and achieving market readiness. Furthermore connecting with recruiters and hiring managers through networking and interviewing is also critical to maintain a successful career path.
