[Career Coach 101] Resources for 50+ Workers

If you are 50+ and looking for a new job, chances are that your search will be uphill. The unemployment rate for 50+ workers has been estimated between 8.7 and 12 percent according to the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA, 2016). There were 2.5 million older Americans who wanted a job but did not have one. The main reason: age discrimination. What are some available resources for 50+ workers in the job search?

EEOC: The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 prohibits discrimination by age and other factors. But age discrimination is real. And age discrimination is everywhere. You can count on it happening and you should factor it into your job search strategy. You probably have seen it already. But how can you deal with this harsh reality?

Resources for 50+ Workers

There are many organizations which are supporting 50+ workers in different ways. They provide resources that you can explore to support your job search or explore options to invest your time and experience for the common good.

Workforce50.com Provider of job search support for 50+ workers.

Encore.org Opportunities to use you experience and time to support youth related initiatives.

AARP Provides services and job search support for 50+ workers.

Managing Rejection

Rejection is commonplace during any job search. You will get a lot of “Nos” before you get the “Yes”. But if you are 50+ and in the job search, the probability is that you will get a higher rate of “Nos” due to age discrimination.

Rejection has a discouraging effect. It can even lead to depression. To maintain motivation during the job search:

  • Focus on your strengths: your positive attributes
  • Use your support network to vent your frustration and get possible recommendations
  • Also keep in mind: the more “Nos” you get, the closer you are to the “Yes”.

Finally, be aware that your body and brain were not designed to do nothing! Even at 50+! Therefore, keep pushing forward!
